My husband is a chain smoker and it worries me because my OB warned me for the secondhand smoking effects on my pregnancy. I am at my 20 weeks gestation and I have to seriously do something about it.

You can let him understand your situation because it is for your baby and I am sure he will understand. Let him sacrifice for the baby as father he sure will make his effort.

I did that already but there are times when he unintentionally smoke with me around. I know he is willing to stop it and that it is also hard for him.

if he can't stop smoking then you should agree that he will not smoke if you are around or near him. i think that would be easy for him.

This situation sometimes is hard to avoid, especially in public places. Your husband should do his part to help you have a healthy pregnancy.

Telling him directly is the main solution for your situation.
