When should the intake of folic acid be started? As soon as you get pregnant try having it. The neural tube defects (NTDs) would be developed if a pregnant woman lacks in folic acid proper quantities. It is being researched that folic acid before pregnancy cuts down the chances of premature birth of the baby and when you get pregnant try to have it in 600mcg each day.
