Amniocentesis - Helpful Test
12 Replies
MomiSarah - November 24

Amniocentesis or AFT (Amniotic Fluid Test) is a test used to examine a small amount of amniotic fluid to detect genetic abnormalities. Who among you here have tried this test?

PerryTim - November 24

This is a new technique to be able to decrease the common risk of miscarriage. I haven't tried this but I am willing to undergo such test for my next pregnancy.

zzzAndreazzz - November 24

What other abnormalities would this test detect?

Momskie - November 26

It can detect at an early stage of pregnancy if the baby has down syndrome. This procedure is performed from week 15 onwards.

goldengirl - November 26

Any idea on how much will this procedure cost?

HEAVENKNOWS - November 26

I think it range from $1,000 to $2,0000. It is a prenatal test so I think it will also depend on your OB and the area you are in.

XoXo - November 30

That is expensive. But I think it is a helpful test.

Halina_88 - December 2

This should be a part of the prenatal test in order to identify early stage of disorder.

bambi - December 3

How is this procedure performed? Is it a major or minor one? How does it feel?

DannyR - December 3

"Amniocentesis is a fairly common diagnostic procedure during pregnancy. During amniocentesis a needle is inserted into the amniotic sac and a small amount of amniotic fluid is withdrawn. This is often done in conjunction with ultrasound to ensure that the needle is in the right place. The procedure is used to test for fetal chromosomal abnormalities such as Downs Syndrome or Spina Bifida. The test is routinely offered to women who might be at a higher risk for having a baby with these conditions. For example, a woman over the age of 35 or one who has this sort of problem in her family history. Amniocentesis can also positively identify if the fetus is a boy or a girl." ----

Very clear explanation here.

quo - December 3

i've tried this procedure, this is just a minor one and it would just take awhile.good post DannyR, thanks!

jackie_ruiz - December 3

So it is more like an ultrasound. I am willing to undergo such test if I get pregnant.

xXStephXx - December 3

Yeah this is helpful indeed. I am also willing to have this test, quite expensive though.
