Should i get tested? - September 26

I noticed a blister on my vagina. I went to the doctor the next day , I was not tested, my doctor just looked at it and confirmed my suspicion that it was herpes. She prescribed Acylovir and I started it immediately. Within 4 days the blister was healed. I haven't had sex since October and this was the only herpes symptom I had. My new boyfriend who has only had oral sex with me was tested and it came back negative. Could it be something other than herpes and should I go get a blood test anyway?

This is odd. The doctor should have cultured the blister to determine if:

(a) it really is herpes
(b) whether or not it is HSV1 or HSV2, i.e. the two viruses that cause herpes

At this point, you should go get a type specific HSV test like HerpesSelect.

I heard of this too. You can get tested at planned parenthood if your doctor will not do it. Make sure that the test that you receive is HerpesSelect. Ask for it by name.

If it is HSV1, that is different from HSV2 in terms of transmission and management. Genital HSV1 is less transmissible because it recurs less frequently, sheds less virus, and 60% of the population has already been exposed to HSV1 (most via cold sores).

Urrrrgggghhhh I hate it when docs don't culture things.

A visual diagnosis of herpes is wrong about 70% of the time, and even if it is herpes, you need to know what type.
